Background & Inspiration

I was out for a walk with my wife and dogs along the Black River near my home in the autumn of 2012 and was impressed by the beauty of the yellow leaves. I associated these colorful leaves with the poetry of Robert Frost and was compelled to write a song about him. My approach was to tell a story by using the titles and subject references from Frost’s poems. There are twenty-six of them. Can you find them? (Repeated verses and choruses don’t count.) I consider this to be one of the most beautiful songs on the CD.

Lyrics

A thawing wind creeps down the kitchen chimney.

The pasture mourns the sound of the trees.

Two roads diverged and left love and a question

In hardwood groves among the yellow leaves.

The moonlit evenings in a sugar orchard

Have left you one acquainted with the night.

Both mending walls and swinging in the birches

Each boundless moment is a gift outright

(Chorus) When October brings the wind and window flower

Disillusion’s gathering leaves around us swirl.

The poet leaves us this directive revelation

We have a lover’s quarrel with the world.

A dust of snow after apple picking,

The line-storm song warns you must be away.

A prayer in spring heralds a winter Eden.

Like fire and ice, nothing gold can stay.

(Chorus)

A thawing wind creeps down the kitchen chimney.

The pasture mourns the sound of the trees.

Two roads diverged and left love and a question

That filled your life among the yellow leaves.
